Chickasaw Nation Annual Meeting Gospel Concert set Oct. 1

The 2011 Chickasaw Nation Gospel Singing Concert in Tishomingo, Okla. will include performances by several local and professional musical talents.

The concert will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 1, in conjunction with the 51st Annual Meeting of the Chickasaw Nation and the 23rd Chickasaw Festival.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the free concert, which begins 2 p.m. at Eighth Street, behind the Chickasaw Capitol Building.

The southern gospel group consisting of James and Starla Dean, of Shelby, Ohio, is one of the featured performers for this year's concert. The husband and wife team formerly performed nationwide and in Canada, Honduras and Grand Cayman Islands with nationally known southern gospel group Kevin Spencer and Friends. They have also appeared on the Gospel Music Television (GMT) with the group.

Returning this year as another featured group is the Oklahoma group, Forgiven Quartet. For nearly 30 years, the group has been performing southern gospel music in a 16-state area including Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The group has also appeared in concert with many of the top names in gospel music including The Mark Trammell Quartet, Legacy Five, The Cathedrals, JD Sumner and the Stamps, The Florida Boys, The Nelons, The Lesters, and Albert E. Brumley Jr.

Members are Mark Brooke (tenor) from Bartlesville, Mark Green (lead) from Owasso, Ryan Bilby (baritone) from Sapulpa and Stanley Johnson (bass) from Enid.

Jae L. Stilwell, a mainstay at the historic McSwain Theatre in Ada, Okla. for almost two decades, will make a special appearance.

Ada-native Stilwell has made numerous appearances on television, radio and the live stage. A veteran to the music scene, Stilwell has performed with many country music legends. She is also the manager of the McSwain Theatre.

Local talents Amber Tamez and Ashleigh Dunn will also perform.

In addition to the concert, several other activities and events are scheduled throughout the Chickasaw Nation Sept. 24 to Oct. 1 to mark the 2011 Chickasaw Nation Annual Meeting and Festival.
