A historic Ada theatre is forging a new chapter in its long history by offering niche entertainment for all ages.

Built in 1920, the McSwain Theatre made history when the first “talkie” picture in Ada was screened at the theatre in 1929.

Today, budget-savvy families can count on the McSwain for wholesome, family movies each Thursday.

The McSwain offers a variety of movies at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Titles range from classics such as “National Velvet” and “Romance on the High Seas” to all-time favorites such as “The Natural” and “Enchanted.”

Regardless of what movie is showing, the McSwain offers a state-of-the-art experience with plush seating and large screen.

For many, the theatre’s personal touch and exceptional customer service are two of the most important aspects of the theatre.

Couples like Carl and Pat McEntire, of Coalgate, are regulars at the Thursday afternoon movies. They count on the McSwain for affordable, quality entertainment.

As they entered the McSwain one Thursday to watch George Clooney in “Tomorrowland,” the couple was greeted with the aroma of popcorn wafting through the lobby, a friendly welcome and a cup of coffee from theatre employees.

Catching up with McSwain friends prior to the movie is paramount.

“I get a kick out of visiting and telling jokes, it’s like old friends,” Mr. McEntire said.

The McEntires are long-time theatre patrons and also regularly attend the McSwain’s Jae L. and Crossover variety show each month.

“We have season tickets for the Saturday night shows,” he said, noting a few of his family members’ names are inscribed in the bricks on the sidewalk just outside of the theatre, which means his family was once honored at the McSwain’s Grand Awards Show.

Ticket prices for Thursday movies range from $2 for children 12 and younger and seniors 60 and older, to a $5 “combo deal” that includes movie ticket, popcorn and a drink. General admission is $3.

McSwain’s Children’s Summer Movie Series 2016, which kicks off in June, will feature current and classic children’s movies. Admission to the Children’s Summer Movie Series is $1 or $5 for a “combo deal.”
